While what you’ve seen in movies and TV may make it sound like root canals are torturous dental procedures done only to cause pain, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Root canals are done to save a tooth that is severely infected, and the modern technology and techniques used at Mid Wilshire Dentistry have made the treatments relatively quick and comfortable.

When Do I Need a Root Canal?

As a Los Angeles orthodontist, we find that many children suffer from overcrowding issues, creating the need for orthodontics. This can happen as a result of losing teeth before they are ready to come out.

Whether due to an accident or a lack of oral hygiene, when a baby tooth falls out prematurely, the teeth around it can move into the open space. This can cause the shape of the palate to change, and when the adult tooth is ready to come in, there is no room for it. In the past, many people had their teeth pulled in order to make space for all of their teeth where now, we can create a space using a variety of treatment methods.

At Mid Wilshire Dentistry, we also treat patients throughout the 90010 area that need orthodontics due to their jaw being out of place. This can make it painful to speak, chew, and even open your mouth. When the bite is off, many people find simple daily activities uncomfortable and seek treatment, as a result. In other cases, we provide solutions for teeth that have grown in crookedly, even if there was enough space for them. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can resolve all of these issues.

The Procedure

Typically a root canal is recommended (or sometimes even needed) when an infection forms deep within a tooth. Due to an injury or perhaps a severe, untreated cavity, bacteria can infiltrate the tooth and infect the pulp deep within it. If left untreated, this infection could become so severe that the tooth would have to be removed.

How is a Root Canal Performed?

Root canals are essentially a four-step process, with treatment typically performed over two visits to the office.
