Can Dental Implants Get Cavities?

Dental implants are one of the most advanced and durable solutions for replacing missing teeth. They not only restore your smile but also function and feel just like natural teeth. One of the most common questions patients ask at Mid Wilshire Dentistry is whether dental implants can get cavities—and the simple answer is no.

Unlike natural teeth, implants are made of titanium posts and ceramic crowns, which are not susceptible to decay. This means that bacteria and acids cannot erode the material the way they can with natural tooth enamel. However, while implants themselves can’t get cavities, the surrounding gum tissue and bone still require diligent care to stay healthy.

Peri-Implantitis

If plaque builds up around the implant, it can lead to peri-implantitis, a condition similar to gum disease. This infection affects the tissue and bone supporting the implant and, if left untreated, can cause implant failure. That’s why maintaining good oral hygiene is essential even after your implant is placed.
